James Madison University

History

The field of computer science is quite young and the Department of Computer Science at JMU is younger still. At most colleges/universities, computer science was a sub-discipline of either mathematics or electrical engineering. At JMU, computer science began to split off from mathematics in the early 1990s. In 1993 a Computer Science Program was created in the newly-formed College of Integrated Science and Technology. The Computer Science Program was subsequently renamed the Department of Computer Science.
