CS Internship Program: Information for Intern Employers
The CS internship program is for rising juniors and seniors who work in the IT industry over the summer. The program is intended to provide students an alternative educational experience that complements and strengthens their classroom education. Students receive credit towards their degree requirements equivalent to one CS elective course for the internship experience.
Requirements for internship employers include:
- Internship positions must be IT-related, creative and analytical in nature, and at least eight weeks full-time in duration, between May and August, inclusive. Acceptable jobs include programming, design, administration, testing, etc., of software, networks, or databases. Jobs that are not acceptable include help desk, installing computers, running cables, and clerical work. We will be happy to talk to you about the details of any potential internship jobs to clarify this requirement.
- Interns must be under the regular supervision of an experienced IT professional.
- The internship supervisor must provide a written work plan at the beginning of the internship and two written evaluations, at the middle and end of the internship respectively. The supervisor is expected to review and discuss these documents with the intern and with the internship coordinator in the CS department at JMU. We provide forms for this purpose, and are happy to accept equivalent internal documents as well.
We don't operate an internship placement service, rather we help employers and students to connect and leave it to them to work out the details. There are several ways in which we can help to recruit students for your internship positions.
- We can send position announcements directly to all CS majors. Students will contact you directly to apply. Send announcements to Ralph Grove.
- You can post your position on JMU's jobs database, which is called MadisonTrak. Contact the JMU office of Career and Academic Planning for more information.
- JMU holds an Internship Fair each spring, at which time intern employers are invitied to meet and interview prospective interns. The office of CAP can also help you if you wish to participate in the Fair.
