A view of the CISAT building

The Department of Computer Science is housed in the ISAT/CS building, which is one of the newest on the JMU Campus. This building houses excellent classrooms and laboratories, a branch of the university library, several study rooms, and department offices. It also has a fantastic view of the central JMU campus and the mountains to the west.

Graduate Student Office

Graduate students in Computer Science enjoy the use of an office set aside strictly for their use. The office has eight computer workstations, a telephone, and other amenities. CS graduate students use this space for working, meeting, and relaxing while at school.

Laboratories and Research Facilities

The CS Department manages several computing labs that support undergraduate and graduate classes. There are two networking labs that contain workstations and network equipment used for building operating systems and network applications. Two virtual labs have been added recently, which give students access to individual servers over a virtual private network. These systems are used primarily to study network security. The department has three computer labs set up for classroom activities, with 30+ workstations each. One of these labs uses RedHat Linux, while the other two use MS Windows. A cluster of Linux servers provides students with individual accounts for software development projects and for personal web sites.

Classrooms

An ISAT classroom

Classrooms are modern, comfortable, and include state of the art computer and presentation systems. All CS graduate classes are taught in the ISAT/CS building, within the vicinity of faculty offices and the graduate student office.

The Campus

The JMU Campus, in addition to academic buildings, includes student service offices, a bookstore, various dining facilities, student housing, recreation facilities, theaters, and athletic fields.

The University Recreation Center provides JMU students with exercise equipment, a weight room, large indoor pool, racketball and basketball courts, and an indoor climbing wall. The UREC also loans equipment for outdoor sports and provides a variety of activities and claSSSs centered around personal fitness.

The woods and gardens of the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, adjacent to the campus, offer a quiet place for walking, picnicing, or quiet contemplation.
