James Madison University is located in the City of Harrisonburg, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The University is close to major highways (I-81 and I-64) and is serviced by a regional airport just a few miles away. Both Richmond, Virginia and Washington, D.C. are two hours away by car. Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia, is one hour away.
The town of Harrisonburg was officially chartered in the late 18th century, though it's settlement began much earlier. Its population is over 40,000 and growing. The weather is moderate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from a low of 20F(night)-40F(day) in January to a high of 62F-85F in July. The town has excellent medical facilities as well as abundant shopping, dining and entertainment options.
Several theaters and concert halls are found within the University and the surrounding towns, including JMU's Wilson Hall, the Experimental Theater, the Court Square Theater in Harrisonburg, and the Blackfriars Playhouse in nearby Staunton, VA. All year round you can find a variety of presentations, including modern, folk and classical music, drama, comedy, and the unusual.
Those who enjoy outdoor activities will find many opportunities nearby for getting out. JMU's location, between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachian range to the west, makes it ideal for hiking, skiing, mountain biking, canoing, climbing and other outdoor recreation. Shenandoah National Park is nearby, which includes the scenic Skyline Drive. The University Recreation Center offers a variety of classes, excursions, and equipment rentals to outdoor enthusiasts.
